Denver’s mayor has ordered adult-use marijuana businesses to close their doors by 5 p.m. MT on Tuesday and to remain shuttered until April 10 under a new stay-at-home order covering the residents of Colorado’s largest city.

Medical marijuana dispensaries, by contrast, are deemed “essential and will be allowed to remain open under the mayor’s order, according to alt-weekly newspaper Westword.

“This is not a recommendation,” Mayor Michael Hancock said, according to Denverite. “It is now an order for city and county of Denver to stay home.”

The mayor’s decision will deal a financial blow to recreational retailers in Denver as well as cannabis cultivators and processors throughout the state that sell into the cannabis supply chain.

Denver residents must go beyond the city limits to find recreational products, but many of the surrounding counties and municipalities in the Denver metropolitan area allow only medical marijuana sales.

It’s also unclear how many MMJ patients in Denver have let their medical marijuana ID cards lapse because recreational cannabis was widely available and often offered a more varied product selection.

Like adult-use marijuana shops, liquor stores were deemed nonessential by Hancock.
